Self Made Websites

Post by DarkCryLove » Mon Feb 13, 2012 8:54 pm

if like me, you have took time to create your own website, and want to get it noticed by other people, this is the place to broadcast your website with whatever it contains.
or if you want to create a website and wish for some help, this will hopefully be a place for information.
for and example of a self made website please view mine http://thedarkcrylove.weebly.com/

I did mine on Yola which has been good. Eventually I would like a more premium site where paypal is only an option and not the only way to pay.

I created one using Dreamweaver to help me lay it out & with the HTML as I'd never done one before. I did it purely for self expression and I did have a blog linked to it, but I stripped it out during a difficult time in my life. I think it's rather pretty so I'm planning on reactivating it (though must admit I can't recall why I used so many naked women pics!!!):

I do pay for the name registration & web hosting separately; it's not that pricey of you look around. I did use Purple Cloud, but they've just been bought out.

If you want to have a bash at creating a free site you can have a go on Wordpress - you can set up a blog there but that's not all it's used for - you canand additional pages for free. It is limited but it's good practise:

I've rather been enjoying a browse round myself, I like this thread. Informative and plenty of room for procrastination :)

In the olden days I had some "built from the ground up" websites... Nowadays I only have the MySpaz profile (click on the banner in my signature).

I never get around to deleting old abandoned websites so they just sit there neglected on freespace servers.
This was my last one that I stopped updating 6 years ago. http://freespace.virgin.net/davesavage.deadline/index.html

But I've also used Moonfruit for one of my clients websites. Moonfruit is quite simple to use, though the e-commerce module is again only PayPal compatible, but it's just so simple to set up ordering and payment. The problem with Moonfruit sites is that they don't do well in Google rankings.

Just wondering if anyone can help a real novice at this 'website building' lark.

I made one for our Bands For Land stuff yesterday, and I couldn't seem to get the hyperlink thing to work. Also, the person who runs our actual charity website wants to add it to that, but she says there's something called a 'bad gateway' to one of the pages?? Not sure if that makes sense, but if anyone can help I'd be grateful!

I've not looked at making Weebly pages, but I'll take a wild guess;

You are wanting to make a hyperlink within your body text that turns the ucetk.org type into a link directly to that website?
Within the web building software, there will be a "make button" or "insert link" option. It should be as simple as highlighting the text you want to make an active link out of and when you choose "make button", you will get a window with a little box to type the url into (the full web address you want to redirect to when someone clicks it).
Make sure you put the full url ; http://www.ucetk.org

As for the "bad gateway"... sorry no idea what that might be.

:D despite it's content, it is really made and hosted on Google pages though.

I originally set it up for using hidden urls such as www.tezinadress.co.uk

Or linking to a news item about Wham to reform and make heavy metal album here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/music/wham_thrash_album

Some people think it's funny, some think I really should get a life.

The "502: Bad Gateway" error is caused when two computers cannot agree on the correct protocol for communication. If your website is working correctly when it is standalone and the error only occurs when it is 'added' to the main website it is a problem that only your web admin can solve; there is nothing you can do.

Having said that I am not sure what you mean by 'adding' it to the site. The proper way to do it would be to take each page of your new site and place it as new page on the original site and a 502 error is unlikely. If it is just being linked to from the original site then it is probably either an incorrectly formatted link or some problem in the set up of your main website.
If you can't beat them with brains, baffle them with bullsh*t
